Because Jumpstart of Polyhex sounds a lot more palatable to Functionist authorities than Flashwing of Kalis.
Of course that's no longer a problem, which is why she goes by Jumpstart of Kalis now. It's honest, she hasn't been Flashwing for a very long time and until Eukaris didn't realize she had any attachment to the name left at all.
The Decepticons are supposed to be the ones that welcome beastformers, but then we have jerks like Blast Off. TALK ABOUT PREJUDICE AND EUKARIS.
Jumpstart knows a lot of bots who went over to the Decepticon side because they were treated like shit in Kalis. Jumpstart is in the position of having been one of the big losers under Functionism who nevertheless took one look at the Decepticons and called bullshit.
Which is not to say that she is particularly wise or righteous. Nope. By the time Decepticonism was threatening to overturn Cybertron Jumpstart had made it out of Kalis and was doing just fine in Polyhex. Granted, there are developments in MTMTE demonstrating that she almost certainly would be dead without the Decepticon movement, but Jumpstart was basically a card carrying member of the bourgeoisie when Megatron came to town. She wanted nothing to do with the core Decepticon constituency, but for fastidious, elitist reasons rather than Functionist conviction. Jumpstart was simply not in the mood to help the menial classes kill the mechs she was beginning to regard as her friends. She was a beastformer, not a miner. Both low on the Functionist scale, but also from different constituencies entirely.
So prejudice is a funny thing. Flashwing was at the bottom of the ladder, the lie that was Jumpstart of Polyhex became attached to at least the more cosmopolitan parts of the establishment, and Jumpstart of Kalis is kind of inbetween.
I dunno what that says about Eukaris, except that the old primes were dicks.
Anything noteworthy happen to Jumpstart while she was in a 'con prison camp?
I have some ideas but nothing is firm. The idea that Jumpstart had spent some time in a 'con prison camp (which let's face it is gonna be Grindcore) was a detail I tossed into her bio on a whim so it could be there if I ever needed an RP hook. And it lent a little texture to her otherwise entirely unremarkable wartime service.
This may be the subject of a story once MTMTE gives us a little more detail on Tarn. You'd think he would appreciate having a trained performer under his watch.
Talk to me about Eukaris. I loved Jumpstart on Eukaris. What is Jumpstart's spirituality like? What kind of impact does seeing a giant birb Titan have on her? (I also really loved bouncing NPC Airazor off her but that's not a question.)
I loved Eukaris too! It was a lot of fun so thanks for running it. I let myself be a little selfish with Jumpstart because it was a wonderful character opportunity.
I don't think Jumpstart is particularly spiritual. I mean the basic beliefs are there, Primus, titans, etc. But I don't think those questions have ever really consumed her in any way. It's hard to think of an event that would cause Jumpstart to have a spiritual crisis. Seeing Chela was neat for her because now she can tell people she was forged in the image of a titan. That's pretty cool!
Jumpstart is still processing Eukaris. I think that meeting Airazor was the first time she ever met someone who looked like her. Kibble sharing is very important. Jumpstart still strongly identifies as a Cybertronian, and almost all the good things in her life came from running away from her beastformer heritage, but now there's this revelation that there's a whole society and history out there. And Airazor was super cool so it can't be all bad. Even if these Eukarans seem a little backwards and factional. So I think Jumpstart will remember Eukaris and feel a little more comfortable because of it. I could imagine her visiting again, but I don't think she would ever want to stay.
Does Jump enjoy her unglamorous, sometimes grimy maintenance work? It seems uncharacteristic for a birdformer, or is that the point?
No. But, everyone on the ship has to have a job.
Jumpstart is, in a word, useless. I had originally intended the character be something of a nurse, but we have a big glut of healers so I steered away from that. She can still fix people, she's just waaaaaaay down on the medical depth chart. And we don't have many maintenance people, so...that's Jumpstart's job.
And it has been delightfully ill-fitting to the character's sensibilities. The reason she didn't get sick during the plague was she got stuck in the ventilation system when quarantine protocols kicked in. It lets me ramp up the salt factor and give her a reason to be almost anywhere.
