Tailgate wants to be greater than he is. He has the spark for heroism but lacks some of the ... details. Never mind the details! An ancient, courageous little bot picked up by the Lost Light before its departure. Friendly, inspiring, and youthful despite his age, Tailgate wants more than anything to live up to an ideal of heroism-- despite any perceptible shortcomings.

Tailgate may be extremely old, but in his spark he is the same bot that he always was, and his personality still speaks of youth. Time hasn’t changed him fundamentally, though the weight of his realized ordeal still weighs heavily on small shoulders. Tailgate possesses an inner strength rooted in courage and compassion, and while he is sincere, kind, and trusting, his sense of fortitude is unmistakable as a fine quality. The perseverance and patience required of him during his lengthy entrapment is something that he has kept even in this new age he’s been brought into. Generally good-humored and ingenuous, Tailgate can still realize when someone is yanking his chain. When at ease, he is playful, sociable and enjoys friendship, though there are always those bots who find his persistent friendliness to be bothersome.

Despite his boldness and willpower, however, Tailgate is under no illusions; he knows that he is small, he knows that he is relatively unimportant, and he knows that he is not the most capable bot when it comes to being what people call a hero. In these he is riddled with self-doubt and a lack of purpose, and a tendency to dig himself too far into a hole to make up for the former; Tailgate wants to be all he believes that he is down under the surface. He wants to be the bot that he claims to be; in this, the lies that he tells to cover for his doubts and insecurities are ones that are seeded from his most earnest desires. He wants to belong. He wants the love and respect of friends. He wants to be someone, someday. Maybe he will be. Wouldn’t that be grand?

Tailgate loves trying his hand at story-telling, despite his lack of experience. His career was intended to be in waste disposal, and so he is expertly familiar with the procedures and safety protocols in the field. Tailgate hadn't had much time to explore things aside from that intended career, as being stuck below ground for millions of years does not give one time for many hobbies or learning opportunities. He's making up for lost time now, and has learned many things along the way.

He’s a pretty good liar, too--

--and courageously inspiring when he needs to be.

Tailgate's records begin six million years ago; born in Rivet's Field on Cybertron two weeks before the launch of the Ark-1, Tailgate was assigned to a low ranking sanitation role and given the job of cleaning the Ark-1's coolant tubes before take-off. He was late to the job-- and in the end, Tailgate never made it there at all. If anyone noticed, they never looked for him. As a low caste bot with a basic role, Tailgate was unimportant enough to be subsequently forgotten in the ongoing flow of Cybertronian time.

That is, until he finally was able to blow his way out of the Plateau using what was left of his supplies, and was picked up by the Lost Light during their last moments on Cybertron. Now all that’s left is for Tailgate to pretend he’s a better, more important bot than the one they think he is. The truth is a hard pill to swallow; when he was found, and told how long he had been missing, Tailgate was heartbroken. He should have been found in days, maybe weeks. Instead, nobody noticed. Nobody cared. Something so horrible shouldn’t have happened, and yet it did. His own past being of no consequence, he took it upon himself to construct a heroic, dramatic past for himself. Tailgate wanted to be someone bigger than he was, and since nobody on the Lost Light knew the truth of it, convincing others that he had a past in Bomb Disposal and was a part of the Primal Vanguard was easier than it should have been.

With a new lease on life and a new self to introduce to the post-war world, Tailgate is doing his best to catch up with the times and find his place in them-- even if it means running over a few bumps along the way. Maybe more than a few. Okay, a lot of bumps.
