From Transformers: Lost and Found
|Played by: Fathom|
Penchant can pick up on ongoing thoughts in another mechanism, and with some concentration, subconscious thoughts. Due to an extremely long period of disuse, he's not too good at it, as he can only focus on one mech at a time, and they must be within a moderate range. Sometimes he'll miss his target completely, or accidentally clue them in on his attempts. Strong-willed individuals can shut him out completely due to his lack of practice. Basically a less powerful version of Soundwave's ability, only Penchant can't transmit, just receive.
Penchant was courier from Altihex, and had been classed /just/ above disposable, working as a simple luggage cart for a hotel frequented by visiting politicians. Amongst the ratioism and the subsequent clampdown, he'd admire activists from afar, but dare not say anything himself, as his job and his smallish group of courier co-workers were all that brought him happiness. So they pressed on in the Functionist society for some time until Penchant found himself answering his snarky friend's thoughts, much to both of their surprise. Fearful of anyone else finding out, he urged his friend to keep his apparent mind-reading a secret, despite the excited urging from him to go to that "wacky academy with those provocative lectures that you keep watching in the lobby".
Penchant spent a great deal of his time around the higher classed politicians as he'd occasionally be tasked as a gofer, running errands between buildings. As a result, he came to learn the ins and outs of domestic affairs in Altihex. He witnessed oppression first-hand, as it was drafted, properly written up and then passed as law, only to come down on him and everyone close to him. He could hardly fathom what went on in the Senate proper. Embittered, he continued to keep his head low, until the recreational shutdowns due to Decepticon terrorism. With his co-workers opting to leave the planet in the mass exodus of civilians, Penchant lingered perhaps too long and got caught up in an attack on Altihex, barely making it out alive with his remaining buddy, Turnaphrase. As they witnessed a great deal of neutrals getting trapped in the crossfire, Penchant and Turnaphrase couldn't bring themselves to just abandon their brethren, and quietly organized a group called Egress. The small group grew over time, and they were able to extract a decent number of civilians from dangerous situations before eventually departing for the stars with the rest.
At some point in the long stretch of time before the signal from Cybertron, Penchant's modest band dispersed as the civilians in their care left to find homes in colonies, outposts or any alien planet that would accept them. Penchant had aggressively ignored his outlier ability and at times refused to even acknowledge it, until Turnaphrase drew it out of him in a heated argument, for the worse. They ended up parting ways after their return to Cybertron, and Penchant angrily sought /some/ form of progression by joining the crew of the Lost Light.
